Morocco: from the beginning of 2012/13 MY grain imports increased

According to the latest report of the analysts of the National interprofessional Office of grains and pulses (ONICL) of Morocco, in January 2013, the country imported 190 thsd tonnes of grains, including 150 thsd tonnes of maize and 20 thsd tonnes of durum. Note, in December 2012 the grain imports totaled 450 thsd tonnes of grains, including 210 thsd tonnes of wheat and 180 thsd tonnes of maize. The imports decreased due to the weakening of the total import activity.

Despite this fact, since the beginning of the season-2012/13 grain shipments to Morocco have reached the level of 3.43 mln tonnes against 3 mln tonnes atthe same period in the previous year. Wheat shipments formed 1.37 mln tonnes from the general volume, which corresponds to the last year index. It should be noted that Ukraine (0.64 mln tonnes), France (490 thsd tonnes) and Canada (440 thsd tonnes) were the main suppliers of the grain.

As for the imports of maize, in the reporting period Morocco increased the imports by 30.7% per year - to 1.53 mln tonnes. At the same time, Brazil and Argentina remained the leading suppliers of the grain to the country — 1 and 0.5 mln tonnes, respectively.
