In the current season Russia and Ukraine significantly increased the exports of wheat to the Maghreb countries. Thus, only in the first half of 2012/13 MY the index totaled nearly 2 mln tonnes, up 15% compared with the whole previous season, declared Svetlana Sinkovskaya, Chief of the Marketing department of APK-Inform Agency, during her speech at the International Trading Summit Grains & Oilseeds-2013 in Casablanca on March 6.
Ukraine forms the major share of wheat exports to the Maghreb region, in the current season its share totaled 73% of the general exports from the Black Sea region. Generally, during July-January period wheat exports from Ukraine to the region has increased in almost 3 times compared with 2011/12 MY - to 1.4 mln tonnes, she added.
The expert also noted that Ukraine most significantly increased supplies of wheat to Morocco - from 54 thsd tonnes in 2011/12 MY to 657 thsd tonnes for half of the season only. As a result, the country reached the 1st position in terms of Ukrainian wheat purchases in the current season among the other countries of the Maghreb.
S.Sinkovskaya also noted that during many year in a row Libya remains the largest buyer of wheat from Russia among the Maghreb countries.
In the first half of 2012/13 MY Libya purchased almost half of wheat exports from Russia to the countries of the Maghreb region, said the expert.
In the current season the general export potential of the Black Sea region (Ukraine, Russia and Kazakhstan) was estimated at 21 mln tonnes of wheat. To date, the region exported over 18 mln tonnes (July-January). Thus, the unrealized potential of exports totals nearly 3 mln tonnes of wheat. At the same time, only Kazakhstanhas the significant export potential for the second half of 2012/13 MY (2 mln tonnes), Russia and Ukraine almost completed its ability to export wheat.
