Development trends of the sunflower processing sector in Ukraine and Russia are significantly different – expert

The trends of development of the Ukrainian and Russian sunflower seed processing sectors have significant differences, declared Irina Strashkina, representative of the company Orexim Limited, during her speech at the International Trading Summit Grains & Oilseeds-2013 in Casablanca on March 6.

The Ukrainian sector of sunflower seed processing is completely export-oriented, and the demand for the products on the global market has the key role in development of the reporting segment, said the expert.

In turn, the oilseed processing sector in Russia mainly works exclusively for the domestic consumption and, as a result, the volume of exports varies greatly from year to year, she added.

The expert also analyzed the dynamics of export shipments of sunflower oil from these countries. In particular, I.Strashkina noted that in 2011/12 MY Ukraine exported 3.26 mln tonnes of sunflower oil, up 23% compared with the previous year result. Russia supplied 1.4 mln tonnes of the product on foreign markets, up 7.8 times.

In the first half of the season-2012/13 (September-December), Ukraine exported 1.26 mln tonnes of sunflower oil, and Russia - 250 thsd tonnes, the expert added.
