According to the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine, as of October 24 Ukraine planted winter barley throughout the areas of 838.4 thsd ha, a decrease of 18% compared with the same date last season (1.023 mln ha), which is the minimum index for 5 recent seasons.

At the same time, in some oblasts of the forest-steppe zone and Polesie (Kiev, Sumy, Kharkiv, Ivano-Frankivsk, Lviv oblasts), the actual planted areas have already exceeded the previously forecasted levels. But in the steppe zone, where the most production capacities of the grain are located, the share of barley planted areas totaled 76% only of the forecasted level (672 thsd ha, against 889 thsd ha). The situation is caused by unfavorable agrometeorological conditions primarily in Odessa and Mykolaiv oblasts, which are the traditional leaders of barley production in Ukraine. Moisture deficit and low air temperatures in October were the limiting factors for development of crop areas, and continuation of planting works.

According to APK-Inform analysts, the potential of barley production in Ukraine is reached by 50% only, and it is necessary to increase the profitability of production and distribution efficiency for its better realization. At the same time, the dominance of barley domestic consumption in terms of the declining demand, and substantially increased costs for the grain production in terms of the global fall of prices, have not yet formed the required conditions for significant development of the market segment yet.
