In the Crimea the production volumes of early grains are expected to reach 860-870 thsd tonnes, declared Nikolai Polyushkin, Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food, on May 23.

At the same time, he noted that agrarians have to harvest early grains throughout the areas of 600 thsd ha. Beginning of the harvesting campaign is expected in mid-June 2014, depending on weather conditions.

As for the spring crops, N.Polyushkin reported that insufficient planting of maize and sorghum in the current year totaled almost 50% due to lack of the Dnieper River water, and the rice was not planted at all.

The Minister added there are no food problems in the Crime, due to reduction of rice areas, because there the nearby Krasnodar Krai produces nearly 1 mln tonnes of rice. And the Crimean agricultural enterprises were forced to plant maize, sorghum and millet throughout the areas intended for rice.
