In the following 10 years, Russia and Ukraine can significantly increase the production volumes of wheat at the expense of their existing potential to boost the grain yield indices, declared the Chief executive at the brokerage company Vicorus, Nico de Deugd on March 3 in an interview to Reuters.
"There is big potential for growth in yields in the Black Sea region over the next 10 to 12 years, as the area has potential to boost yields as much as two-and-a-half times", he said.
In particular, the expert noted that to date, Russia produces nearly 60 mln tonnes of wheat per year, with the average yield of 2.4 t/ha.
"Russia is producing around 60 mln tonnes of wheat with current yields. The output will reach 150 mln tonnes if yields rise to the level of the European Union", said the Chief executive.
Also, Ukraine has rather significant potential to increase wheat production. According to Nico de Deugd, the average yield of wheat in Ukraine totals nearly 4 t/ha, which is already comparable with the level of European countries (6 t/ha).
