Ukraine: maize became the main export commodity of the grain market
During the recent ten-year period maize production in Ukraine increased in over 3 times, which provided rather significant impact on crop production in the country, and the grain market as a whole, informed Andrei Kupchenko, analyst of APK-Inform Agency.
Thus, in 2014 the general harvest of the crop totaled 8.9 mln tonnes, which was quite sufficient for the domestic security of the country with the consumption level of 5 mln tonnes. In 2013 the harvest totaled 30.9 mln tonnes. At the same time, the share of maize in the general harvest of grains and industrial crops totals 39%, and in the structure of production of grains only - 49%. At the same time, maize grain failed to acquired the strategic importance for the country, such as wheat has, and maize became the major export commodity of the grain market of the country.
