During 10 recent years, the production of organic goods in Ukraine increased by 90%, and the annual domestic consumption market totals 21-22 mln EUR, declared the Deputy Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine, Olena Kovalova on July 11.

According to her, the market segment is very dynamic, it continues developing, with both export and domestic market orientation. Therefore, it is important for Ukraine to adopt the draft law on organic products to have a modern legal basis for organic producers in Ukraine, and to overcome consumer distrust in Ukrainian organic goods.

Adoption of the draft law will provide a number of positive features for Ukraine. Thus, it consults interests of all concerned parties - non-governmental organizations, producers, public authorities, and specifies activity of the organic market sector - maintains its development trends.

According to the Deputy Minister of Agrarian Policy for European Integration, Olga Trofimtseva, to date the EU countries, Asia and the USA are the main markets for Ukrainian organic products. Also, in the nearest future Canada will become a new market for the products, taking into account that the Canada-Ukraine Free Trade Agreement (CUFTA) will enter into force on August 1. Canada has a serious demand for organic goods. Canada, the USA and the European Union form nearly 90% of the global demand for organic goods. Coming into effect of the draft law #5448 will allow harmonizing the Ukrainian legislation on the quality of organic products with the international standards, added O.Trofimtseva.
