In 2012 Moldova reduced the volume of agricultural production by 22.4%

According to preliminary data of the National Bureau of Statistics of Moldova, in 2012 the volume of agricultural production in the country decreased by 22.4% compared with the previous year. At the same time, the major share of losses was caused by decreasing of the production volumes of plant growing commodities by 32.6%.

In particular, in 2012 maize production in Moldova decreased by 51% (to 571 thsd tonnes), sunflower seeds - down 30.1% (to 295 thsd tonnes), sugar beet - down 0.8% (to 584 thsd tonnes).

Reducing of the production volumes of the main agricultural crops in Moldova in 2012 was caused by decreasing of their average yield, due to very poor weather conditions (drought). In particular, the average maize yield decreased in 2.7 times, wheat – down 1.7 times, soybeans and sunflower seed – down 1.6 times, barley – down 1.5 times.
