Ukraine: high profitability is one of the factors determining development of the maize market - APK-Inform

During recent 5 years the share of maize in the general structure of planted areas under grains in Ukraine increased from the level of 16% in 2008 to 31% in 2012. At the same time, in 2012/13 MY the planted areas under the grain reached the absolute record - 4.7 mln ha, and the grain harvest volumes are estimated at 19.6 mln tonnes, which is also one of the highest harvest results for the grain, declared Rodion Rybchinskiy, Head of the department of business-projects of APK-Inform Agency, in his report within frames of the discussion "Problematic issues of the quality of maize grain in 2012/13 MY" on February 13.

He also stressed that the main factors determining development of the Ukrainian market of maize in the current season included favorable weather conditions during the planting and vegetation periods of the grain, varietal diversity of seeds on the market, high crop yield, available technologies of growing, high prices on the domestic and export markets, and the high level of profitability, which according to APK-Inform Agency, totaled 102% in 2012.

R.Rybchinskiy called serious consequences in the terms of real fight against GMO products and the possible lack of quality seeds at the further increasing of the planted areas of maize as the factors, which in the medium-term prospect may adversely affect development of the market segment in Ukraine.
