Ukraine to re-plant nearly 9% of winter grains areas – Hydrometeorological Center

In 2013 Ukrainian agrarians will have to re-plant 9% of winter crops areas, which is significantly less than in 2012, declared Tatyana Adamenko, Head of the agricultural meteorology department of the Hydrometeorological Center of Ukraine, on February 25.

According to her, the forecasted level of re-planting is not too high, whereas last year due to adverse weather conditions, in particular the short spring, 25% of winter crops areas were perished.

The present winter conditions were very good, and favorable. Even in such regions as the Crimea, due to the thaw, agrarians will have to re-plant 10% of the areas only, said T.Adamenko.

The expert also noted that the ice crust was still held in Sumy, Chernihiv, Kharkiv oblasts, which had negative impact on the condition of winter crops.

Previously, the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine forecasted re-planting of winter crops at the level of 3-5%.

According to specialists of the Hydrometeorological Center and the Ministry of Agrarian Policy, in the absence of severe weather phenomena, in 2013 the harvest volumes of grains in Ukraine may exceed the last year index by 20-30%. The grain harvest in 2012 totaled 46.2 mln tonnes, against 56.7 mln tonnes in 2011.
