Ukraine not yet exhausted the potential of increasing the yield of grain crops – APK-Inform Agency

During recent 12 years the yield indices of wheat and maize in Ukraine substantially increased, declared Rodion Rybchinskiy, Head of Business projects department of APK-Inform Agency, on March 21 during his report at the round table "Condition of winter crops and the forecast of its production in Ukraine in 2013”.

If in 2000 the average yield of wheat in Ukraine totaled 1.98 t/ha, then in 2012 it increased to 2.8 t/ha. In the reporting period, the yield of maize increased from 3.01 t/ha to 4.79 t/ha, said the expert.

However, R.Rybchinskiy said that even taking into account the marked increasing trends, wheat and maize yields are still inferior to the same indices in the leading countries-producers of grains.

According to R.Rybchinskiy, the potential for growth of the indicator in Ukraine is far from being exhausted.

The further improving of the average yield of the main Ukrainian grains is quite possible. First, by improving the quality of seeds and wide application of advanced agricultural technologies in their production, said the expert.
