Horacio A. M. Sánchez Caballero, Project Coordinator of GPS, Group of Producing Countries from the Southern Cone, will make a report within frames of the Ukrainian Agrarian Congress, to be held in Kiev, on October 15-16.

The specialist will make a report "Grain production in South America, and its role in the global food security", which covers the experience of South American countries to ensure food security.

A growing world population, with increasing necessities for better access to food, both in quantity and quality, represents a challenge involving the different participants in the food chain: more production, better quality, compliance to sanitary regulations, better logistics and more transparent and efficient markets are some of the challenges that must be met. In this context, the small group of countries that are Food Net Exporters have a special role to play. Their business approach and humanitarian solidarity includes the responsible use of their natural resources, using state of the art technology and assuring that their food supplies reach the market in a stable, transparent and predictable way.

Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay are the major food net exporters of the World, representing 30% of the global net export market. If Ukraine is included, this figure reaches 32.6%. And if Australia and New Zealand are included, the figure reaches 40% of net food exports.

Because their great participation in global net food exports this group of countries have a considerable responsibility in relation to global food security, stability of supplies and food price volatility. In order for them to be able and willing to assume their responsibility in the Food Security field it is necessary to have adequate international market conditions with good and stable access to markets in the importing countries and reasonable overall market regulations.
