Countries of the Black Sea region cover 50% of the world production of sunflower seed – expert

Countries of the Black Sea region (Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan) provide nearly one half of the world production of sunflower seed. According to the USDA data, in 2014/15 MY the index totaled 31.23 mln tonnes, declared the Head of Informational Division at APK-Inform Agency, Irina Ozip on November 19 during her report at Georgia Agro Forum -2015.

She noted that during several recent years, the share of the Black Sea countries in the global production structure of oilseed crops (sunflower seed, soybeans, rapeseed) varies at the level of 7%, and the region's share in the world exports of oilseeds – 3-4%.

Ukraine occupies the leading position among other countries of the Black Sea region by export volumes of oilseeds. Soybeans and rapeseed form the major share in the export structure of oilseeds from Ukraine and Russia, while sunflower seed is more focused for domestic processing, explained I.Ozip.

According to her, during several recent years there were no clear trend in the supply of oilseeds from the Black Sea region of Georgia, but we should stress two peak seasons - 2012/13 MY (12.9 ths tonnes) and 2014/15 MY (13 thsd tonnes ).

In 2014/15 MY, the share of Ukraine in the general exports of oilseeds from the Black Sea countries to Georgia totaled 84%, and in 2013/14 MY - 92%, the expert informed.
