Turkmenistan to increase its capacities at the Caspian ports

The President of Turkmenistan, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov proposed to hold the country's first international meeting on further enlargement of the sea ports potential in the Caspian countries, declared the national television channel Altyn Asyr on November 23.

According to the President, to date the country started realizing the large-scale project on construction of the Türkmenbaşı International Seaport, which will contribute to further development of mutual transport connection with the Iranian ports Anzali and Neka on the Caspian Sea, and give opportunity to increase cargo shipment activity through the port of Bandar Abbas in the Persian Gulf.

In order to improve the relationship of seaports, and taking into account rather great potential of the new railway link Kazakhstan-Turkmenistan-Iran, G.Berdimuhamedov proposed to found the Turkmen-Iranian intergovernmental coordination commission on transportation issues.

Also, it is noted that modernized large-scale vessels of the Turkmen commercial fleet are actively involved in the freight cargo transportation in the Caspian Sea, serving international routes from the Türkmenbaşı port to the ports of other Caspian countries.

As a reminder, the Turkish company GAP İnşaat will construct the modern seaport in the city of Türkmenbaşı on the Caspian Sea by 2017, including the shipbuilding and repair facilities. The project cost is estimated at 2 bln USD.
