During five recent years, Russia significantly increased the planted areas under corn, which in 2015 totaled 2.8 mln ha, against 1.7 mln ha in 2011, declared the head of grain market department at APK-Inform Agency, Olexandrina Ovdienko during the meeting-discussion "Harvest-2016: market of crop protection products and seeds in Russia" on April 26.

At the same time, in the same period the planted areas under wheat and barley also increased to 26.8 mln ha and 8.9 mln ha respectively, but the corn segment showed the most significant growing dynamics in the sphere of planted areas compared with other crops.

Due to expansion of grain planted areas, the general production of major grains enlarged. Thus, in 2015 the harvest of corn totaled 13.2 mln tonnes (7 mln tonnes in 2011), wheat - 61.8 mln tonnes (56.2 mln tonnes), barley - 17.5 mln tonnes (16.9 mln tonnes).

Also, the yield indices impacted on the harvest volumes, as well as expansion of the planted areas. So, in 2015 the corn yield reached 4.93 t/ha, against 4.34 t/ha in 2011. At the same time, in reporting period the highest rate was observed in 2013 – 5.01 t/ha. But the yield indices of wheat and barley depend on whether the crop is related to the winter or spring variety. Thus, during five recent years the yield of winter wheat increased to 3.2 t/ha (2.99 t/ha in 2011), and the yield of spring wheat fell to 1.55 t/ha (1.64 t/ha). But the yield indices of both spring and winter barley in 2015 decreased to 2 t/ha and 4 t/ha, against 2.1 t/ha and 4.16 t/ha in 2011, respectively. Therefore, the grain did not show any significant rise of production volumes, compared with wheat and corn results, summed up O.Ovdienko.
