As of May 1, 2016, agricultural organizations in Russia planted spring crops throughout the areas of 7.2 mln ha, an increase of 2.1% compared with the corresponding date of the previous year. In particular, the planted areas of spring grains and leguminous crops (excluding corn) totaled 3.6 mln ha (up 11.1%), reported the Federal State Statistics Service (Rosstat) on May 19.

According to the announcement, the planted areas of spring wheat totaled 699 thsd ha, up 37% compared with the beginning of May 2015, corn for grain - 704 thsd ha (down 6%), sunflower seed – 1.056 mln ha (down 1.1%), and sugar beet - 633 thsd ha (down 6%).

As of May 1, the Central, Southern, North Caucasian, Volga and Crimean Federal Districts provided 96.2% of the areas within the planting campaign of spring crops in Russia.
