Traditionally, the Middle East and North African region is one of the key importers of grain crops. According to the USDA forecasts, in 2016/17 MY countries of the region will import nearly 103.9 mln tonnes of wheat, barley and corn, an increase of 1% compared with the last season figures (102.4 mln tonnes), and over 31% of the global imports of the reporting crops (330.6 mln tonnes).

In particular, wheat will form the major share of import purchases in the current MY, which will reach 24.8 mln tonnes to the Middle Eastern countries (up 1% compared with 2015/16 MY), and 28.1 mln tonnes to North Africa (up 1%). The market segment of corn will demonstrate more significant increase – 16 mln tonnes to the Middle East (up 5%) and 17.3 mln tonnes the countries of North Africa (up 4%). As for barley supplies, the imports will somewhat decline to 14.6 mln tonnes (down 1%) and 3.2 mln tonnes (down 5%), respectively.

Ukraine is one of the key suppliers of grains to the region. In 2014/15 MY, Ukraine exported 16.3 mln tonnes of the reporting grain crops to the MENA region, or 16% of the general imports to the region (101.2 mln tonnes).

In 2015/16 MY, the general volume of supplies of Ukrainian wheat, barley and corn to the region totaled 13.8 mln tonnes, or 14% of the general imports. Thus, each year Ukraine provides nearly 15% of grain imports to the Middle East and North Africa.
