During several recent years, the exports of Ukrainian food products to the United Arab Emirates demonstrate rather negative dynamics. To date, its share covers less than 1% of export earnings. The trend is mainly fueled by some difficulties with the Halal food certification, which first started in 2016, and continue developing in the current year again, declared the Ukrainian Food Export Board (UFEB) on February 7.

According to the State Service on Food Safety and Consumer Protection, since February 2017 the UAE will apply the new procedure for controlling of the sales of halal products. Thus, the Ukrainian certification centers will have to register in the Authority for Standardization and Metrology of the UAE, which can take a long time.

In 2013-2015 period, the revenues from supplying of food products to the UAE declined from 165 mln USD to 134 mln USD, and during 11 months of 2016 the figures totaled 106 mln USD, which is quite unfavorable trend, said the Director at UFEB, Bogdan Shapoval.

In particular, in January-November of 2016 Ukraine supplied food products to the UAE at 105.5 mln USD, or 0.7% of the general agricultural exports of Ukraine in the reporting period. Vegetable oils (50% of the export earnings), chicken eggs (17%), grains (11%) and chicken meat (5%) became the key positions of supplies to the UAE market. Dairy products took 1.6% only in the revenue structure. According to B.Shapoval, it is the spare potential in trade relations between the reporting countries, because the UAE have the ever-increasing population and high living standards, and demonstrate a significant demand in high-quality Eastern European dairy products.
