According to forecasts of the FAS USDA, in 2017/18 MY Russia will be increase its wheat exports by 1.5 mln tonnes, compared with the current season to 28 mln tonnes, despite the expected decline in the grain production volumes.

So, despite the expected decline in wheat production in 2017, Russia will manage to keep its high positions on the global export market at the expense of large-scale carry-over stocks in the current season.

In the new season, the harvest of Russian wheat will reduce by 6.5 mln tonnes year-on-year, to 66 mln tonnes, down 1 mln tonnes, compared with the forecast of IGC. Both weather factor and a slight decreasing of the planted areas will contribute to lowering of the grain production volumes. However, to date the forecasts are just preliminary, taking into account possible impact of the weather conditions on winter wheat areas in April-May of 2017.
