EU is not ready to offer membership to Ukraine – J.Barroso
The European Union countries are not ready to offer its membership to Ukraine yet, although such possibility may arise in the future, said José Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission Commission, on March 27.
"Why the European Union has offered membership to Ukraine? Because member states are not ready for such a step now. They believe that not only Ukraine is not ready, but the EU is not ready at this stage to include a country like Ukraine. But we always say that the door is not closed to entry, this possibility exists in the future," said J.Barroso.
However, the Head of the European Commission stressed that Ukraine needs re-organization: reforms, fight against corruption, a higher degree of accountability of the authorities to the public.
He noted that the proposal for membership to Ukraine requires the consent of the countries-members of the EU. "We need unanimity among member-countries, we are far from that for Ukraine, said the President of the EC.
