According to the recent figures of APK-Inform Agency, in July-February of 2019/20 MY Ukraine supplied 3.9 mln tonnes of barley on foreign market, an increase of 21% compared with the same period last season (3.2 mln tonnes). As for the geography of grain exports, in the reporting period Saudi Arabia, China, Spain, Turkey and Algeria were the main countries-importers, which together purchased 71% of the Ukrainian grain shipments.
At the same time, Saudi Arabia became the single importer in the TOP-5, which for eight months of the current MY reduced the imports of Ukrainian barley. The purchases decreased by 52% compared with the same period last season, which in absolute terms totaled 1 mln tonnes of the grain only. Also, China increased the purchases of barley from Ukraine in 2.5 times — to 798.5 thsd tonnes. After rather long break, in July 2019 Spain resumed foreign purchases of the grain, and imported 372.8 thsd tonnes for eight months. As for Turkey and Algeria, their import volumes increased in 21 times and 34 times respectively, to 325.2 thsd tonnes and 226.8 thsd tonnes.
It is worth noting that according to APK-Inform estimations, in 2019/20 MY the harvest of barley in Ukraine totaled nearly 8.9 mln tonnes (up 21% compared with the harvest of 2018/19 MY), while the export potential was estimated at 4.8 mln tonnes (up 35%). In July-February period, Ukraine already realized the potential by 81%. But it is difficult to forecast the further development of the foreign trade of Ukraine, due to the current situation with the COVID-19 pandemic, explained the analyst at APK-Inform, Viktoria Rozhko.
