Ukraine cut export of seed of major grains by 25% in 2020

According to Customs Service of Ukraine, common export of seed of wheat, corn, rye and barley declined by 25% to 11.9 thsd tonnes in 2020.

At the same time, export of corn seed increased by 57%, while shipments of wheat seed decreased by 75%.

Higher profit from seed export was a positive moment. Currency returns reached 16.8 mln USD in 2020, up by 28% from 2019.

Share of corn was the largest in both volume and monetary terms in the overall structure of seed export. It totaled 66% and 79% correspondingly. The average price of corn seed remained quite stable, while the high share of corn seed in overall export led to positive effect.

About 65% of Ukrainian seed of grains was exported to Belarus in 2020, 15% to Romania, 7% to Moldova. Israel (59%) and Moldova (26%) were the main destinations for wheat seed. Belarus was the only one importer of Ukrainian rye seed. Azerbaijan (51%) and Moldova (46%) were importers of rye seed.
