According to Customs Service of Ukraine, over the last three years, import of seed of main field crops has exceeded 60 thsd tonnes. It declined to 48 thsd tonnes in 2020 that formed only 2-3% in the overall seed fund of the main crops, declared the Head of Business project unit with APK-Inform, Andriy Kupchenko within Online Seed Forum-2021 on March 11.
He explained that wheat seed forms the core of Ukrainian seed fund. Only two field crops - wheat and barley - form 80% of seed fund of the country.
“That is why the import of wheat seed is quite low. The situation with barley is similar, however, Ukraine imports seed of malting barley. Share of imported sunflower seed is the highest. It had been 70-80% over the last three years and declined to 58% in 2020. Share of corn seed import had been about 33% and declined to 19% in 2020. At the same time, the share of imported rapeseed seed grew from 325 to 44%”, - he explained.
A.Kupchenko added that the production of seed of corn, sunflower and rapeseed is growing in Ukraine. However, the country is still largely dependent on import.
