Dry weather in July-September hurt the production potential of durum wheat in Kazakhstan, declared Ivan Malygin, trader with Grain Partners within Asia Grains&Oils Conference in Qazaqstan on November 17.

“Durum wheat production is concentrated in three oblasts – Akmola (30% of the area), Kostanau (29%) and North Kazakhstan (35%). These oblasts have faced a significant lack of rains this year. Therefore, the production of durum wheat will decline sizably in 2021/22 MY to the lowest level since 2017/18 MY”, – the expert said.

He noted the reduction of durum wheat production in Kazakhstan over the last 3 seasons. Farmers have been narrowing the areas under durum wheat amid low prices formed in 2019. Only 380 thsd ha were planted with durum wheat in 2020/21 MY.

“We estimate the planted area under durum wheat stay unchanged this year. However, drought cut the yield to 0.95 t/ha. Hence, the production will be as low as 360 thsd tonnes in standard weight, down from 540 thsd tonnes last season”, – he specified.
