Taking into account the rapidly growing volumes of agricultural goods production and exports in Ukraine, the share of cargo traffic transported by the inland waterways of Ukraine can even double in the near future, and reach 20% of the general volumes of cargo transportation in the country, reported the Head of Trading Department at HTU SA / AgroVista Agroholding, Oskar Neudert, during his report within frames of the international conference Middle East Grains&Oils Congress-2020, on March 3.

To date, the share of river transport in the structure of grain and oilseed cargoes shipment by types of transport in Ukraine totals nearly 9%, whereas last year it did not exceed 6%. At the same time, in 2018 the general volumes of cargo transportation by the rivers of Ukraine increased by 22.4% — to 9.9 mln tonnes, including 3.1 mln tonnes of grains (up 18% y-o-y), and in 2019 the figures reached 11.8 mln tonnes (up 19.2%), including 4.9 mln tonnes of grains (up 58%), the expert said.

Also, O.Neudert noted that since 2013, Ukraine demonstrated the upward dynamics of agricultural goods volumes transported by river vessels.

According to the speaker, to date there is every reason for keeping of the dynamics, since the transportation costs by river (from inland elevators to the export terminals) are more profitable in comparison with the transportation costs by road and rail.
