According to APK-Inform, in July-December 2021/22 MY, Ukraine exported record 15.9 mln tonnes of wheat, up 27% y/y.

Traditionally, North Africa (24%), Middle East (24%) and Southeastern Asia (23%) were the leading importers of Ukrainian wheat.

Particularly, the shipments to Southeastern Asia remained virtually unchanged y/y at 3.7 mln tonnes, supplies to North Africa increased by 20% to 3.9 mln tones, while the export of wheat to Middle East doubled to 3.8 mln tonnes.

“Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Israel accounted for the bulk of the export surplus. Turkey tripled import of Ukrainian wheat to 1.532 mln tonnes in July-December 2021/22 MY. Supplies to Saudi Arabia increased by almost 10 times to 621.9 thsd tonnes. Israel doubled purchases to 325.4 thsd tonnes”, – APK-Inform said.

The experts told that the stronger demand for Ukrainian wheat is based on lower carry-over stocks in the Middle East countries. Additionally, smaller crop and weaker export potential along with the export restrictions in Russia that usually is the key supplier of wheat to the Middle East has shifted the demand to Ukrainian origin.

APK-Inform forecast the export of Ukrainian wheat at record 22.5 mln tonnes in 2021/22 MY.

More detailed information about trends and prospects of the Black Sea wheat market will be presented at an international conference Grain&Maritime Days on May 24-25 in Istanbul, Turkey.
