In Ukraine, the production of agricultural products did not become less vulnerable to the weather factor, declared the Head of Agrometeorology Department at Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center, Tetyana Adamenko during her report at the seventeenth international conference Grain & Maritime Days in Odessa on May 25.
Droughts, extremal high air temperatures, low-efficiency precipitations, reduction of the irrigated areas, etc. contributed to the instability of crop yields in the country, especially in southern oblasts, the speaker explained.
According to T.Adamenko, by 2030 Ukraine will face the growth of the average air temperature (compared with 1991-2010 figures) in the spring by 0.2-0.4 CO, and in the summer — 0.4-0.7 CO. As for precipitations, by the reporting year in the spring their depth will increase by 5-20 mm, whereas in the summer the level will reduce by 10-20 mm. Such scenario of climate changes will cause decreasing of the barley yields in the steppe zone by 15-20%, the corn yield in the steppe zone — down 20%, and in the forest-steppe zone — down 35%.
According to her, the climate changes require adaptation and introduction of various water saving technologies. Minimizing of the climate risks is possible only in terms of adaptation to the climate conditions, which are synchronized with the climate change rates. Ukraine needs a recovery and development of the irrigation system, concluded T.Adamenko.
