In August-January of the season-2017/18, Ukraine increased its purchases of buckwheat on foreign markets by 1.6 thsd tonnes, compared with the whole last MY, declared the Head of the grain market department at APK-Inform Agency, Anna Tanskaya during her report at the seventeenth international conference Grain & Maritime Days in Odessa on May 25.

She explained that since 2011, the planted areas under the crop in Ukraine started gradually decreasing, as well as the harvest volumes and carry-over stocks, which developed into a supply shortage on the market and formation of the upward price trend, which demonstrated the most actively position in the second half of 2014/15 MY.

In 2016, the planted areas under buckwheat started increasing — 154 thsd ha, against 133 thsd ha in the previous year. At the same time, the buckwheat supply on the domestic market was insufficient, the prices continued gradually growing, which contributed to further increasing of the areas to 189 thsd ha in 2017.

But again the weather factor made its impact, which significantly reduced the yield from 1.15 t/ha in 2016, to 0.97 t/ha in 2017. Therefore, last year the harvest of buckwheat increased by 4 thsd tonnes only compared with 2016, said the expert.

According to A.Tanskaya, the deficit of buckwheat supply in Ukraine was somewhat compensated by the imports of the grain of mainly Russian origin, which although has the lower qualitative indices compared with the Ukrainian grain, but significantly better prices. It was a turning point in development of the price situation on the market of buckwheat. So, since March 2017 prices on the Ukrainian market of buckwheat started declining, she added.
