In Ukraine, there is a tendency to reduce the planted areas of peas. According to forecasts of APK-Inform Agency, in 2012/13 MY the areas under peas for the harvest-2012 will decrease to 260 thsd ha, declared Svetlana Protsyv, expert of the feed grain market of APK-Inform Agency, at the eleventh international conference "Grain Forum - 2012" on June 8 in Yalta.

S.Protsyv noted that in 2011 the areas under peas totaled 275 thsd ha, against 305 thsd ha in 2010.

However, such reduction of the planted areas did not cause any serious concerns of the market operators about the general harvest of the grain. Most operators were fully aware that these figures to be lower compared to the previous ones. However, there are no talks on the market about a possible grain shortage, said the expert.

According to her, in 2011/12 MY the peas harvest is expected to reach 364 thsd tonnes. In 2012/13 MY the harvest of peas will reduce and total 331 thsd tonnes.

S.Protsiv also noted that exports of peas in 2011/12 MY decreased, and according to forecasts of APK-Inform, by the end of the season the index will total 135 thsd tonnes, against 179 thsd tonnes last year. According to the market operators, the work of traders is mostly complicated by the high offer prices on the domestic market, due to the fact that importers prefer purchasing less expensive grain.

As a reminder, on June 6, 2012, the eleventh international conference "Grain Forum – 2012", organized by APK-Inform Agency, began its work in Yalta. The event was supported by the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine and the Ukrainian Grain Association.

The conference ended its work on June 8, 2012.
