The annual global production of durum wheat totals nearly 30-37 mln tonnes. At the same time, such regions as the EU, Canada, North Africa and Turkey produce 50% of the general harvest of the grains, while Canada, Mexico, the EU, the USA and Kazakhstan provide one half of the general exports of durum (nearly 9-12 mln tonnes per year), reported the Project and Business Designer, Expert on durum wheat, International consultant on trading and contracts, Alex Bignoli during his report within frames of the international conference "KazakhGrainExport 2019" in Istanbul, on September 19.
The Mediterranean countries purchase nearly 60% of the whole exports of durum wheat. At the same time, the share of Canada in the global volume of durum exports totals 48%, Australia — 14%, the EU — 11%, Mexico — 11% and Kazakhstan — 8%. It should be noted that the grain supplies from the reporting countries (excluding the EU) usually face the high logistics costs, the expert said.
According to A.Bignoli, durum wheat of Kazakh origin continues increasing its share on the market at the expense of high qualitative characteristics, acknowledged by many pasta manufacturers. In addition, one of advantages of the Kazakh grain is that Kazakh agrarians harvest durum wheat after ending of the harvesting campaign in Europe.
Also, the speaker noted that grain processors, pasta producers, etc. are interested in preliminary contracting of durum wheat production. Therefore, grain producers can plan their planting campaign in advance, which results would meet the relevant market requirements.
