EU increased imports of Kazakh oilseeds in 2021/22 MY

In 2021/22 MY, the total volume of supplies of oilseeds from Kazakhstan to the EU amounted to 358.3 thsd tonnes, which accounted for 28% of the overall export of oilseeds and was 39% higher than the total volume of supplies to the EU in the previous season.

In the structure of supplies to the EU in 2021/22 MY, oilseeds accounted for almost 88%, meal and cake for 11%, and vegetable oils for only 1%. At the same time, the EU market share for Kazakh exports of oilseeds was 37%, meal and cake – 28% and oils – about 2%.

Flaxseed dominated in the structure of oilseeds exports to the EU in 2021/22 MY, accounting for 86% of supplies. Rapeseed accounted for about 8% and soybeans for 4%. At the same time, 59% of all export of Kazakh flaxseed were shipped to the EU market, while in the previous season this figure was 56%.

The largest EU buyers of Kazakh oilseeds were Belgium (52% of total supplies) and Poland (27%). Belgium increased imports from Kazakhstan by 31%, and Poland by 23% compared to the previous season. Lithuania increased the purchases by more than 46 times compared to 2020/21 MY and accounted for 7% of total imports by EU countries.

According to APK-Inform, in 2022/23 MY, the export potential of Kazakh flaxseed is estimated at 470 thsd tonnes, which is 3% higher than the previous season. The export of sunflower seed may reach 280 thsd tonnes (+25%). Sunflower oil export can reach about 190 thsd tonnes (+7%), sunflower meal – 170 thsd tonnes (+7%).
