In the current season, wheat production in Moldova totaled 1.25 mln tonnes, a decrease of 5% compared with 2017/18 MY, while the grain exports increased from 380 thsd tonnes to 700 thsd tonnes, declared the Head of trading at Trans-Oil International SA, Thierry Beaupied during his report within frames of the international conference Middle East Grains & Oils Congress in Cairo, Egypt, on March 11.

According to him, the country also demonstrated some increasing in production of other grain crops. So, in the season-2018/19 the harvest of corn totaled 2.1 mln tonnes (up 27%), while the export of the grain reached 850 thsd tonnes, up almost 60% compared with the previous season. Nevertheless, barley production slightly increased — from 240 thsd tonnes, to 247 thsd tonnes, but the grain supplies on foreign markets decreased to 168 thsd tonnes (down 4%).

Despite the fact that Moldova produces rather small volumes of grains and oilseeds, in comparison with Ukraine and Russia, the country gives the special attention to the qualitative figures of the crops. For several recent years, Moldova increased the yield figures of all produced crops, said T.Beaupied.

Thus, in the current season, the average yield of winter wheat in the country totaled 3.26 t/ha, spring wheat — 1.97 t/ha, winter barley — 2.92 t/ha, spring barley — 1.93 t/ha, corn — 4.62 t/ha, peas — 1.44 t/ha, sunflower seed — 2.28 t/ha, rapeseed — 2.04 t/ha, and soybeans — 2.17 t/ha.

The achieved results provide the good opportunity to expand the exports and logistics potential of the country. So, the Moldavian government plans to develop the duty-free supplies of grains, flour and vegetable oils to China. The authorities see the potential in trading with grain, pulses and oilseed by-products, as well as in development of organic production, the speaker added.
