In 2018/19 MY, the share of Russia in the global production of sunflower seed totaled 24%, which made the country the second largest country-producer of the oilseed after Ukraine, declared the Vegetable Oils and Oilmeals Trading Director at EFKO Group of Companies, Anton Gritsai during his report within frames of the international conference Middle East Grains & Oils Congress in Cairo, Egypt, on March 12.
For 3 recent years, Russia continued increasing the production of the oilseed, which in 2018/19 MY totaled 20.7 mln tonnes, and in the following season the figures will increase to 22.4 mln tonnes. Following the growth in the production of sunflower seed, the country also increased the consumption of vegetable oils — from 1.7 mln tonnes in 2016/17 MY, to 2.3 mln tonnes in 2018/19 MY, and in 2019/20 MY the figures can even reach 2.6 mln tonnes, the speaker said.
According to A.Gritsai, Russia is the second largest country-supplier of sunflower oil on the global market. The country shipped the product to 40 countries, and the number continues growing every year. Turkey, Egypt and Iran are the main consumers of Russian sunflower oil. At the same time, for the recent year China significantly increased the imports of the product — up 112%.
The share of Russian sunflower oil supplies to Egypt significantly exceeded the figures for the Ukrainian product. In particular, in 2017/18 MY Egypt imported 489 thsd tonnes of Black Sea sunflower oil, including 428 thsd tonnes of the Russian product. Since the beginning of the season, Russia already exported 102 thsd tonnes of the product to Egypt. Rostov and Taman were the main seaports, which shipped the oil to the country, summed up in his speech the Trading Director.
