Jordan extremely depends on grain imports. In 2018, the country purchased more than 2.5 mln tonnes of grain crops, and will continue increasing the supplies to meet its domestic demand, declared the Director at Golden Wheat for Grain Trading, Malak Al Akiely during her report within frames of the international conference Middle East Grains & Oils Congress in Cairo, Egypt, on March 11.

In particular, in the reporting period the country imported 930 thsd tonnes of wheat, 770 thsd tonnes of barley, and 1 mln tonnes of corn and soybean meal.

For 3 recent years, Romania became the key country-supplier, which in 2018 shipped 820 thsd tonnes of wheat to Jordan (up 120 thsd tonnes y-o-y), as well as Ukraine — 110 thsd tonnes (up 10 thsd tonnes). At the same time, in the reporting period Jordan did not purchase wheat of Russian and US origin, the speaker said.

According to her, Jordan mainly imports barley of the Black Sea origin, and in 2018 Russia covered the leading position — 560 thsd tonnes (up 210 thsd tonnes y-o-y), followed by Romania — 50 thsd tonnes. In 2018, Jordan did not purchase barley from Ukraine at all, but in 2017 and 2016 the annual imports totaled nearly 100 thsd tonnes. Also, in 2018 France supplied the large-scale volumes of barley on the market — 160 thsd tonnes (up 10 thsd tonnes).

Generally, it is expected that Jordan will continue increasing the imports of grain crops (wheat and barley), and in 5 years the purchasing volumes will increase to 1.87 mln tonnes, against 1.7 mln tonnes in 2018. Therefore, Jordan will continues improving the logistics situation in the country. So, since April 2018 the country launched a new terminal to handle ships of the Panamax type (the transported cargoes increased from 50 thsd tonnes to 60 thsd tonnes), said the speaker.
