According to data of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine, as of May 4 Ukrainian agrarians planted sunflower seeds throughout the areas of 2.72 mln ha, or 66.3% of the official forecast of the Ministry for 2012/13 MY (4.1 mln ha).
We should note that in the current season the planting rates of the oilseed considerably accelerated. Thus, in the same period last year Ukraine planted sunflower throughout 2.08 mln ha only, and the average index during recent 5 years totaled 2.5 mln ha. Such rapid advance of the planting rates was contributed by the favorable weather conditions during most of April 2012. However, in late April - early May, some agricultural producers said that in the terms of summer-high temperatures, the lack of moisture in the soil impedes the planting campaign.
