Among European soybean producing countries, only Ukraine can reach the annual production of 6 mln tonnes, declared Oksana Prosolenko, Executive Director, Regional Director of Eastern Europe at Donau Soja Association on August 26 within a conference Soybean and Meal market.
She noted that Russia has become the largest soybean producers in Europe this year, displacing Ukraine.
“Russia raise soybean production only by expanding the area. It is important to note that the yield of soybean is lower in Russia compered to Ukraine. If Ukrainian producers can increase the efficiency of soybean cultivation using higher yielding varieties, irrigation, they will be able to increase production under the current climatic conditions”, - the expert said.
Prosolenko also stressed that currently there are no registered GM varieties of soybean in Ukraine. Therefore, the cultivation of GM crops is illegal. However, GM seeds and GM cultivation are widespread in Ukraine.
“According to market talks, about 50-65% of soybean, 10-12% of rapeseed and 1% of corn are GM in Ukraine. Association «Agent Green» (Romania) supported by Donau Soja Association held field research in 2018. 60 large fields in 6 main soybean regions of Ukraine were studied. The share of GM soybeans was 48%”, - she pointed out.
