According to Oil World, a sunflower crop of 4.2-4.5 mln tonnes is considered possible in Argentina in early 2023, the highest in 15 years and sharply above the 3.2 mln tonnes produced on the average of the most recent 5 years.
Sunflower plantings will begin in the northern provinces of Chaco and Santiago del Estero in July. Supplies of seeds for planting could be a constraint. However, the government has just allowed imports of additional seed varieties.
Higher production of sunflower would rise Argentine exports sharply in 2023, mainly for sunflower oil and meal. Argentine farmers would thus partly compensate the prospective losses in shipments from Ukraine.
As a reminder, for sunflower complex, Argentine has more favorable export duties compared to those of soybean complex. Export taxes of 7% for sunflower seed and crude sunflower oil, 4.5% for bottled refined sunflower oil and sunflower meal are considerably lower than those of soybean complex (33%).
