Optimal window for winter crops planting coincided with rough air and soil drought in Ukraine in 2020, declared Cand. Sc. Geography, Head of the Agrometeorology department at the Ukrainian hydrometeorological center, Tetyana Adamenko within the online conference Winter planting campaign-2020 in Ukraine: conditions, threats, farmers’ strategy on October 16.

“It was not surprise. Over the last 10 years, Ukraine faced summer and autumn drought every year that led to delay of a planting campaign. Weak condition of winter grain crops before wintering turned to be typical”, - she said.

She pointed out that, in the last 10 years, winter wheat was poorly developed across 25-40% of the area while it completed vegetation. The area increased by 5% more over the winter. T.Adamenko supposed that this year would not be exception.

“Weather conditions are rather tough this autumn. They are critical in some regions, mainly, in eastern part of Ukraine and many regions of southern Ukraine. There will be no rains in these regions in the nearest future”, - the expert added.
