Pulse crops have rather significant food, feeding and agronomic value. The list of pulse crops includes: peas, phaseolus, lens, field beans, lathyrus, rank, vetches, lupine, chickpeas, mung beans, etc.

In Ukraine and Russia peas is the most commonly crop used among other pulses. Peas offers versatility of its usage, it is widely used for food and animal feed. Peas is a very valuable source of vegetable protein, carbohydrates and vitamins, its basic nutritional value is formed by rather high concentration of micro-elements and mineral salts.

The Russian Federation takes the 2nd position in the world by the production volumes of peas, and backs down to Canada only. According to the FAO, during recent five years Russia produced nearly 13-21% of the general harvest of peas in the world. The contribution of Ukraine to the world production of peas totals nearly 4-5%. Ukraine consistently takes the 7th position in the rating of countries-producers of peas during several recent years. According to estimations of the FAO, during recent years the average world production of peas totals nearly 10 mln tonnes per year.

During preparing of the study, APK-Inform analysts used the official statistics of Ukraine (data of the State Statistics Service, the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food) and Russia (data of the Federal State Statistics Service, the Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation). In addition, within frames of the study APK-Inform conducted the polling of agricultural producers engaged in cultivation of peas in the largest regions, relative to the production volumes of the crop in Ukraine and Russia.
