Portrait of large-scale grain producer of Russia: South

The Southern region of Russia is one of the most perspective territories of Russia in economic terms, with significant and very diverse natural and raw material potential, qualified human resources, a variety of sectors of industrial and agricultural production, and well-developed infrastructure.

While estimating the geopolitical and geographical position of the Southern region of Russia, it is necessary to stress the following factors:

- the District occupies the most southern part of the territory of European Russia, located in three soil-climatic zones - steppe, semidesert and subtropical, which contributes to cultivation of various agricultural crops, some of which are grown in the reporting Federal District only;

- the Southern region of Russia is located at the junction of four former Soviet republics - Ukraine, Georgia, Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan, has common borders of great length with the countries, the composite transport network - water, motor road, railway, aviation and pipeline - connects southern Russia with these countries.

Taking into account the key role of the region in the economy of the country, the major object of the study "Portrait of large-scale grain producer of Russia: South" is realization of the comparative analysis of provision of agrarians with resources, and formation of the prime cost of plant growing commodities in the medium and large-scale agricultural enterprises of the Southern region.

The reporting study was conducted on the basis of the polling of agricultural producers of the Southern region of Russia by the method of the sample inquiry, and also using data of the official statistics. The sample inquiry method allows receiving information about block of data with significantly less time and money losses.

As the important step during conducting of the sample inquiry, we formed the representative sampling of respondents from the general population. In order to realize the polling, we formed the sampling of companies, where we kept the real structure of agricultural enterprises in the Southern region in accordance with their available sowing areas.

In the study under the term “the Southern region”, first of all, we mean agricultural enterprises of Volgograd and Rostov regions, and Krasnodar and Stavropol Krais. Thus, during several recent years, agricultural enterprises of the reporting regions produce over 90% of grains and 94% of oilseeds in the Southern region of Russia. During several recent years, the general share of the above-mentioned oblasts / Krais in the all-Russian production of grains and oilseeds totals over 30% and over 45%, respectively.

Within frames of the study, APK-Inform questioned 300 medium and large-scale agricultural enterprises of the Southern region. The sampling included medium-sized enterprises with sowing areas under crops of 1500-4000 ha, and larger enterprises cultivating sowing areas of over 4000 ha.

The general land bank of surveyed agricultural enterprises totaled nearly 2 mln ha (or 14% of the general areas of agricultural lands in the regions under study).

Polling of the stated segment was realized during July 2011, using the special program of the Agency - Survey APK (adapted analogue of CATI).
