China became leading importer of Ukrainian grain in 2020

Egypt used to be the largest importer of Ukrainian grain since 2011. However, Egypt lost its leadership in 2020, while China strengthened its positions, declared the Deputy Director at the National scientific center “Institute of Agrarian Economics”, Academician of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences (NAAS), Nikolai Pugachev.

“China became the leading importer of Ukrainian grain in 2020. It bought about 1/5 of total worth of Ukrainian grain at the sum of 1.855 bln USD. China tripled import of Ukrainian grain over the last three years. The share of China in total worth of Ukrainian grain export increase from 8.9% in 2019 to 19.7% in 2020”, - the expert said.

Egypt moved to the second position among TOP importers. It cut purchases of Ukrainian grain by 15% to 1.12 bln USD. It share totaled 11.9% in the overall export of Ukrainian grain.

Indonesia and Spain took the third and fourth positions correspondingly with shares of 5.8% each. Indonesia was the sixth largest importer in 2019. It raised purchases of Ukrainian grain to 547 mln USD in 2020. At the same time, supply of Ukrainian grain to Spain declined by 29% to 543 mln USD.

In 2020, South Korea and Libya pushed Israel and Italy out of the TOP-10 importers of Ukrainian grains.

“Netherlands (519 mln USD), Turkey (473 mln USD), Tunisia (347 mln USD), Bangladesh (317 mln USD), South Korea (282 mln USD) and Libya (265 mln USD) were among TOP-10 importers in 2020. TOP-10 countries covered 2/3 of total worth of Ukrainian grain export last year”, - N.Pugachev summarized.
