Russia: weather impact on agricultural crops in the first ten days of December 2020

The weather was colder than usually across most of Volga FD during the whole ten-day period of December and across Central FD in the second half of the reporting period. The weather was warmer that usually in most regions of Northwestern FD until December 6-7, after that it got colder here. The average temperature was lower than norm by 8-10° in Middle Volga region. It was lower than norm by 2-7° in southeastern part of Central FD, many northern and some northeastern parts of Volga FD. The average temperature was close to the norm or higher by 2-4° in northern and western regions of the territory.

Precipitations were nearly absent. Light snow (1-5 mm per ten-day period) was observed in most regions of Northwestern FD and western part of Central FD. Snow cover reached 2-5 cm in southwestern regions and 12-15 cm and more in eastern and northeastern regions. There was no snow cover or it was lower than 2-5 cm across western part of Northwestern FD, southern and southeastern parts of Central FD and far southwest of Volga FD. Mass soil freezing started.

Minimal temperature of soil at the depth of tillering zone of winter crops (3 cm) was -8-3°.

Weather was cold and dry in Southern and North Caucasian FDs. The maximal air temperature was -2…2° across most of the territory. Minimal temperature decrease to 12…-5°. The average temperature was lower than the norm by 3-6°.

There was no vegetation of winter crops. Snow cover was almost absent, therefore winter crops might suffer in northern regions where frosts were noticeable. Agrometeorological conditions were mainly satisfactory for winter crops across rest of the territory.

 

Asian part

In the first 3-4 days of the reporting period, the weather was significantly colder that usually in Ural FD. The average daily temperature was lower than the norm by 5-7°. The minimal temperature reached -24…-22°. It declined to 27…-25° in some regions of southeastern part of Ural FD.

Winter grain crops were mainly under snow cover reaching from 8-10 cm to 12-18 cm. Therefore, the decline of temperatures was not dangerous for plants. Warm spell came from December 4-5. The average daily temperature was close to the norm or higher by 2-4°. The minimal temperature was mainly higher than -15°. The average temperature over the reporting period was lower than the norm by 2-4°. Conditions for wintering of grain crops improved slightly and were satisfactory.

In West Siberia, the weather was mainly colder than usually in the first ten-day period of December. The average daily temperature was lower than the norm by 3-6°. The minimal temperature reached -24…-21°. Some warm spell came at the end of the reporting period. The minimal temperature reached 16…-14°.

Snow precipitation was low (5-8 mm). Winter grain crops were under snow cover of 10-15 cm and more. Frosts were not dangerous for plants. Wintering was progressing favorably.
