According to the European Commission figures, since the beginning of the current season (July 1 – August 11) the EU countries significantly increased the imports of durum wheat — to 81.7 thsd tonnes, up 3.3 times compared with the same period last season (24.7 thsd tonnes).

At the same time, Italy traditionally imported the major volumes of the grain. In the reporting period, the country purchased 69 thsd tonnes of the grain, or 84.4% of the whole imports to the EU.

As for the countries-suppliers of durum wheat to the EU in the current season, Canada increased the grain shipments to 49.2 thsd tonnes, against 905 tonnes only in the same period last season. So, to date Canada covered 60.2% of the general grain imports.

Kazakhstan became the second largest supplier of durum wheat to the EU, with the market share of 18.7%. For 6 weeks of 2019/20 MY, the country supplied 15.3 thsd tonnes of the grain, up 70.6% compared with the same period last season (8.9 thsd tonnes).

The USA closed the TOP-3 of durum wheat exporters, with the share of 15.2%, and shipped 12.4 thsd tonnes of the grain to the EU. It is worth noting that last year the imports of US durum wheat totaled 2 tonnes only.

At the same time, in the current season Russia significantly reduced the supplies of the wheat variety to the EU — to 4.8 thsd tonnes, against 14.7 thsd tonnes in the same period last year. Thus, the share of Russia in the general import structure decreased in 10 times — from 59.8% in 2018/19 MY, to 5.9% in the current MY.

As a reminder, the Economist of the International Grains Council (TBA) will report about the main trends and prospects of development of the global market of durum wheat within frames of the international conference "KazakhGrainExport 2019", to be held in Istanbul, Turkey (Hilton Istanbul Bosphorus), on September 19-20.
