Dry weather conditions in July-August made most experts to review downward the forecast of sunflower seeds crop in Ukraine in 2020. APK-Inform Agency analysts also slightly reduced the forecast of the yield – from 26 qq/ha last month to 25.6 qq/ha.

“The most unfavorable conditions are observed in the sought of the country, where farmers register the unsatisfactory development and hollow sunflower inflorescences. At the same time, owing to the increase of the planting areas under the oilseeds by 2% to 6.38 mln ha, according to the State Statistics Service July report, our forecast of sunflower production remained unchanged and totaled 16.2 mln tonnes” – said Julia Ivanitskaya, APK-Inform Agency analysts.

Analyst also increased the estimation of sunflower seed production in 2019 – to 16.1 mln tones (+4%) due to the upward adjustment of the sunflower oil export forecast in 2019/20 MY. Thus, currently the prospects of sunflower harvest this year are equal to previous year results.

“There are more concerns regarding the quality of the future sunflower crop over its quantity. It is highly possible that because of the drought the oil content of sunflower will decline which can lead to the production and export cuts of sunflower oil in 2019/20 MY” – added J. Ivanitskaya.
