In 2018, the planted areas under spring wheat in Russia will slightly exceed the level of 12 mln ha, which will become record low figures for the country, reported analysts of the agency SovEcon.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, as of June 14 the planted areas under spring wheat in Russia totaled 12.06 mln ha, down 1.07 mln ha, compared with the same date last year. Agrarians failed to reach the same figures, due to abnormally cold and rainy spring in the Urals and Siberia, where the spring wheat areas lowered by 0.18 mln ha and 0.79 mln ha respectively, compared with last year, the experts noted.

To date, Russia almost completed the grain planting campaign, since the field works in later terms will pose a real threat of significant crop losses, due to the late harvesting campaign under adverse weather conditions in the autumn in Siberia and the Urals.

At the same time, the harvested areas might become even lower, due to additional losses in terms of the late planting terms of large-scale crop areas, the analysts said.

As a reminder, the previous historical minimum of the planted areas under spring wheat in Russia was fixed in 2013, when the indicator reached 12.73 mln ha.
