The air and soil drought were intensifying and spreading across almost the entire territory of Ukraine due to the deficit or absence of substantial precipitation during the second ten-day period of August as well as the whole month (since July in many central regions), informed the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center.

Many fields in central and southern faced the full drying of a metre-deep layer of soil under late crops. Critical conditions for winter rapeseed planting are observed almost across the entire territory of the country (except western oblasts).

The overall amount of precipitation over June-August period did not exceeded 30-50%of the norm in many regions of Kiev, Cherkasy, Vinnitsa, Kirovohrad, Chernigov, Kharkov, Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, Odessa, Mykolaiv oblasts and neighbor regions of other oblasts.

“Over the fields with the most severe drought, the number of grains in the corn cobs was much lower than the average, cob weight at the milky stage was record low. The vegetation of corn and sunflower seed finished prematurely on many fields”, - was stated in the message.
