In the first ten days of October 2016, Ukraine faced significant changes in weather conditions, due to movement of active cyclones and cold atmospheric fronts through the territory of the country. The cyclones and atmospheric fronts formed heavy and sometimes excessive rainfalls in most oblasts. There was observed intense drop of the air temperature indices. In the beginning of October, the daily temperature indices decreased from +14…18ºC to +5…10ºC, down 3-5º compared with the standard. At the same time, in the first days of October the maximum air temperature reached +24-26º at several meteorological stations in Zhytomyr, Volyn, Rivne and Ternopil oblasts. Also, at several meteorological stations in Kirovohrad, Cherkasy, Chernihiv and Kiev oblasts there were observed the record rainfalls for the first time since 1961, which meet the standards for 2.5-4.5 months.

Duration of sunshine to the ground surface varied within 27-68 hours in all oblasts, which corresponded to the standard level in most oblasts, but slightly exceeded the standard in Odessa and Kherson oblasts, and reduced by 11-37 hours compared with the standard in Chernihiv, Volyn, Zakarpattia, Ivano-Frankivsk, Poltava, Cherkasy, Kirovohrad and Dnipropetrovsk oblasts.

The average air temperature varied from +9° in western oblasts to +15° in the south. In Volyn, Rivne, Zhytomyr, Ternopil, Khmelnytskyi, Vinnytsia, Chernivtsi and Odessa oblasts the average temperature was close to the standard level, but in Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk and Zakarpattia oblasts the index reduced by 1-2° compared with the standard, and in the remaining oblasts the index exceeded the standard by 1.5-4.5°.

In the warmest days the maximum air temperature reached +23…28°C.

In the coolest nights, the minimum air temperature decreased to -1…3°C in Zhytomyr, Vinnytsia and Kiev oblasts, and +1…5°C – in the remaining oblasts,

In the coldest nights, the soil surface temperature decreased to 0…-4°C, while in the warmest days the index grew to +31…46°C. For 1-5 days, most parts of the country faced frosts at the soil level at a height of 2 with intensity of 1-5°.

Ukraine faced precipitations for 2-7 days throughout the whole territory of the country. In most oblasts, the average level of precipitations varied within 143-370% of the standard (10-55 mm), in Lviv, Rivne, Kiev, Cherkasy, Chernihiv, Kirovohrad, Odessa and Mykolaiv oblasts – 480-718% of the ten-day standard (44-79 mm). In Vinnytsya, Luhansk and Chernivtsi oblasts the precipitation level was close to the standard - 10-12 mm.

In some raions of Kiev, Chernihiv, Cherkasy, Kirovohrad and Lviv oblasts, the ten-day precipitation level exceeded the historical maximum for the reporting period of October by 10-40 mm.

In many raions of Chernihiv, Kiev, Cherkasy, Kirovohrad, Dnipropetrovsk, Odessa, Lviv, Rivne, Kharkiv, Mykolaiv and Kherson oblasts the daily maximum level reached 1-2 of the monthly standard (32-67 mm).

The average soil temperature at the depth of 10 cm varied within +10°C in the west to +17°C in the south.

Relative humidity of the air varied within the range of 74-89%.

In the first ten-day period of October, Ukraine faced rather diversified agro-meteorological conditions for the planting campaign, growth and development of winter crops, and finishing of the harvesting campaign of late crops. The conditions mainly depended on the number and duration of precipitations and moisture reserves of the soil.

Heavy rainfalls in most oblasts had a dual effect – they stopped the drought effects, improved the agro-meteorological conditions for formation of sprouts, and vegetation processes of winter crops, but caused waterlogging of the upper soil layers, which slowed down the planting campaign and harvesting works of late crops.

The weather conditions for further development of field works in October 2016 in Ukraine will be good and satisfactory.
