European part

In the beginning of the first ten days of January 2017, the Northwestern, Central and Volga Federal Districts faced somewhat warmer weather conditions compared with the standard, and the average air temperature exceeded the standard level by 4-8°. In most raions of the Central District, southern raions of the Northwestern District, and western raions of the Volga District, there were observed thaw processes (daytime temperature rose to +0…2°C), but in other raions the maximum air temperature mainly totaled -4...-1°C. On January 4, the weather conditions became significantly colder, and the frosty weather remained almost until the end of the ten-day period. On the coldest days, January 6-8, the average daily air temperature reduced by 8-15° compared with the standard (in the northeast of the territory - down 17-23°). The minimum air temperature lowered to -30...-25°C in the northern half of the territory (in eastern raions of the Northwestern District, north-east of the Central District, and north of the Volga District - to -40...-35°), and to -18...-10°C in the southern half. During 1-2 recent days of the reporting period, the average air temperature slightly increased.

During the first ten days of January, the region faced regular snowfalls. In most raions, the level of precipitations totaled 15-25 mm, but in some raions of the Northwestern and Volga Districts - 5-10 mm. Therefore, winter grain crops were under snow covering with the depth of 20-35 cm, and in some north-eastern raions of the Central District, northern raions of the Volga District, and Vologda oblast - 50 cm and more. The minimum soil temperature the tillering zone depth (3 cm) usually varied within -5...-1°C. The weather conditions for overwintering of crops were quite satisfactory. Only in some raions in the north of the Central District and Vologda oblast, where the soil remains thawed, and the minimum soil temperature at the depth of 3 cm totaled 0°C, there were conditions for damaging to winter crops due to rotting processes.

In the Southern and North Caucasian Federal Districts the weather conditions became warm. On most days, the average daily air temperature exceeded the standard level by 2-6°. The minimum temperature mainly reduced to -5...-1°C only. In most raions, the daytime air temperatures mainly totaled +2…5°C (in southern raions on warm days, the index even reached +10°C). Only in some raions of Rostov and Volgograd oblasts, and the Crimea, on some days the daytime air temperatures were negative - -5...-1°C. In terms of warm weather conditions, snow on the fields continued melting and compacting. At the end of the reporting period, the snow covering with depth of 5-10 cm remained in northern raions of the Southern District and the Crimea only, but in southern raions there was observed rather small snow covering (1-2 cm). The weather conditions for overwintering of crops were satisfactory.

In most raions of the European part of the Russian Federation, in January 2017 the agro-meteorological conditions for further overwintering of crops will be mostly satisfactory. In the south of Krasnodar Krai some fields will demonstrate weak vegetation of winter crops in the daytime.

Asian part

In the beginning of the first ten days of January 2017, northern agricultural raions of the Ural Federal District faced much warmer weather than usual. The average daily air temperature exceeded the standard by 8-14° compared with normal, and mainly totaled -6...-3°C in the daytime. Since January 4-5, the weather conditions became colder, and such trend developed until the end of the reporting period. As of January 10, the temperature indices decreased in southern raions of the District, where the weather conditions were usually warmer than usual during the whole reporting period. In terms of fall in air temperatures, the minimum indices in most raions of the District reduced to -32...-28°C, and in some northern raions - to -40°C, and in the south of Chelyabinsk oblast - -20...-18°C. Winter grain crops were under snow covering, which depth varied within 19-25 cm in the south of the territory, but in other raions - 35-45 cm and more, and there was no threat of frost killing for the plants. In the north of the territory, the minimum soil temperature at the depth of tillering zone of winter crops (3 cm) usually varied within -3...-2°C, and in the south - -9...-4°C.

In Western Siberia, the weather conditions were warmer than usual, and in the first half of the reporting period it was unusually warm. The average air temperature exceeded the standard by 11-17°. Even the minimum temperature totaled -5…-1°C only. At the end of the ten-day period, the average daily air temperature exceeded the standard by 3-5°, while the minimum temperature lowered to -23...-13°C. In the second half of the reporting period, on some days the weather conditions became colder than usual. The average daily air temperature reduced by 5-10° compared with the standard, and the minimum temperature dropped to -30...-24°C. In most raions winter grain crops were under snow covering, which depth totaled 15-30 cm in south-western raions, and 40-50 cm in all other raions (in the northeast of the territory - 55-60 cm and more), and the developed cooling trends were not dangerous for the plants. The minimum soil temperature at the depth of 3 cm varied within -9…-1°C. The weather conditions for overwintering of crops were satisfactory.

In most agricultural raions of the Ural Federal District and Western Siberia, the agro-meteorological conditions for overwintering of grain crops will be mostly satisfactory.
