Ukraine: meteorological conditions of the first 10 days of January 2021

The weather was very warm in the first ten-day period of January. At the beginning of the reporting period the temperature reached +5-9°С, up to +10-15°С in southern regions, in daytime, while the average daily temperature was 5-12°С higher than the norm.

Movement of cyclones and their atmospheric fronts throughout Ukraine brought precipitations across the whole territory of the country, mainly rain and wet snow.

The average air temperature was 4.8-7.3°С higher than the norm and varied from +0,2°С on the north to +4,2°С on the south.

The highest since 1961 average air temperature of the first ten-day period of January was exceeded by 1.3 °С in far southern regions of Odessa oblast.

The minimal air temperature declined to -2-7°С.

The maximal air temperature reached +5-10°С, up to +11-15°С in southern region.

The maximal air temperature of the first ten-day period of January observed since 1951 was reached in some regions of Kyiv and Cherkasy oblasts and exceeded by 1-2°С in some parts of Mykolaiv and Kherson oblasts.

The temperature of soil or snow declined to -4-9°С across the most of the country. It reached +10-15°С in the warmest days.

Precipitations in form of drizzling rain, rain, wet snow and snow were observed during 1-7 days across the entire territory of the country. The average amount of precipitation totaled 125-245% of the norm (15-35 mm) in most of oblasts. It was close to norm and totaled 12-19 mm in Ternopil, Chernivtsi, Odessa, Cherkasy, Kirovohrad, Dnipropetrovsk, Poltava, Chernihiv, Kharkov and Luhansk oblasts. The amount of precipitation was 69-72% (11-13 mm) of the norm in Mykolaiv and Sumy oblasts.

In some regions of Zhytomyr, Volyn, Lviv and Kherson oblasts, the amount of precipitation reached or exceeded by 1-9 mm the highest amount of precipitation of the first ten-day period of January observed since 1961.

The relative humidity of the air varied within the range of 81% to 96%.

As of January 10, the height of snow cover reached 1-10 cm in eastern, northern, western, partially Zaporizhia and Kherson oblasts. There was no snow cover across the rest of the territory.

Across most of the country, the depth of soil freezing totaled 1-10 cm. Thawed soil was observed across Zhytomyr, Rivne, Volyn, many regions of Odessa, Zakarpatska, Khmelnytskyi, Kyiv, some regions of Lviv, Chernihiv, Poltava, Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhia, Luhansk, Donetsk and Kherson oblasts.

For 1-2 days, the wind speed increased to 15-20 m/sec across many7 regions of Poltava, locally in eastern, Zaporizhia, Kherson, Dnipropetrovsk, Kirovohrad, Cherkasy, Sumy, Khmelnytskyi, Ternopil, Chernivtsi, Zakarpatska and Ivano-Frankivsk oblasts.

 

Winter crops were in light winter dormancy in Ukraine in the first ten-day period of January. There were no dangerous conditions for wintering of crops across the country. Small growing processes of winter crops resumed in southern oblasts due to warm weather.

The minimal temperature of soil at the depth of tillering zone of winter crops declined to +3…-2°С in the coldest nights that was higher than the critical temperature of wintering.
